There’s a beautiful roadside waterfall near Mill Run, PA called Stewarton Falls just outside nearby attractions of Ohiopyle State Park, Bear Run Nature Reserve, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. Part of Crooked Run, the falls are a little out of the way but are actually located on the Bear Run Nature Reserve managed by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
Directions
Head north on Route 381 for approximately 6.5 miles from Ohiopyle (about 2.5 miles north of Bear Run Nature Reserve). Make a left on Baptist Church Road. Continue on this road for approximately 2 miles until you reach a T intersection where you should see a No Outlet sign. Make a left at the intersection. The road is Stewarton Road but it might not be labeled. If you are saying things to yourself like “are we in the right place?” you probably are. It definitely feels a little off the beaten path. Continue on Stewarton Road for about 0.3 miles where you will see a small parking area on the right side of the road. Park your vehicle then walk down the road about 75-100 yards where you will see the falls.
Make sure your car can handle a rougher road, and in the winter, a road that is likely not plowed if snow-covered. It’s probably best to turn around at the parking area before going down the road any further as the road continues to narrow.
On my last visit, I got a closer look at the falls, but I still didn’t have a chance to view them from the bottom. Check out an iPhone tip for taking pictures of waterfalls.
Some other roadside waterfalls in Fayette County, PA include Robinson Falls and East Park Falls in Connellsville, and Cucumber Falls, Bruner Run Falls, and Ohiopyle Falls in Ohiopyle.
