Have you played disc golf? Disc golf is similar to regular golf except you are trying to get a frisbee in a basket or target in the least amount of throws.

After noticing a few disc golf courses in Fayette County, I figured it was time for a post about where to play. But first, a quick note about my background in the sport and a few notes about gear. I used to play a good bit in college but fell away from the sport after that. I hope to get back into the sport when my kids are ready because I love disc golf! Here’s why:

  • little equipment needed – while some of the seasoned players may have a collection of discs, I’ve been fine playing the game with 1-2 discs
  • inexpensive – courses are generally free so all you usually need to get started is a disc or two and it’s typically free to play
  • exercise – it’s a great way to get some steps and activity in
  • nature – many courses are situated in parks or wooded areas which offers a fun way to get outside in nature
  • multigenerational fun – a great activity for adults and kids

When I first started playing, I played the game with a driver someone let me borrow. Later, I added a putter and that’s all I’ve ever played with. But I have seen players carry a bag with lots of discs to choose from. I’d probably suggest a tennis shoe or hiking shoe and you should be good to go.

If you want to support a small business and want to shop for a wide variety of discs, it looks like Squirrely Discs in Wexford might be a place to check out. Locally in Fayette County, it seems like Dicks Sporting Goods, Walmart, and Target sell discs and other disc golf-related items as well.

Tip – Write your name and phone number somewhere on your disc (typically on the underside) with a permanent marker. Discs are prone to get lost on the courses and maybe someone will give you a call if they find your disc.

Ok, let’s get into where to play.

Jumonville

Jumonville Christian Camp has a disc golf course. Here are some notes:

  • parking – I would suggest parking on the side of Old Braddock Road (a short distance from Jumonville Road), near the hiking trailheads
  • bathrooms – In my experience, there haven’t been open public restrooms here.
  • course – 18-hole course – the first few holes are in an open area around sports facilities (e.g. tennis courts), and the rest are in a wooded area
  • additional features – Jumonville is a gem in Fayette County and there is so much to explore here including the popular hike to the Cross, additional hiking trails, geocaching opportunities, a playground, the historical Jumonville Glen, and more. Learn more about what Jumonville has to offer here.

Wharton Township Recreational Park

Wharton Township Recreational Park is one of my favorite parks in the county. It’s beautiful and is always so well maintained. Plus I love the short set of hiking trails.

  • parking – There is usually a gate that is closed near the entrance of the park during the colder months, so we typically park down near the tennis/basketball court at the entrance. If the gate is open, we might drive up into the park and keep to the left to park near the first tee.
  • bathrooms – There are usually at least a few porta-potties open here in the off-season with other bathroom facilities open in the summer.
  • course – 9-hole course in a wooded setting with hills and creeks
  • additional features – hiking trails, playgrounds, horseshoe pits, volleyball, tennis, basketball, baseball, paved walking loop, and more. I love this park so much I had a geocache here. We can hardly visit the park without a stop at nearby Fuel Coffee Works.

Areford Park

A 9-hole course was recently added to South Union Township’s Areford Park in Uniontown.

  • parking – I tend to park at the park entrance on Eggleston Street but you can also park at the end of Frankhover Street.
  • bathrooms – There are usually open restroom facilities here, and if they are closed, there’s been a porta potty in my experience.
  • course – 9-hole course in an open field behind the playground heading toward the middle school
  • additional features – basketball courts, a tennis court with pickleball lines, playground equipment, a pavilion, a paved walking loop, and more

Patsy Hillman Park

Patsy Hillman Park in Hiller, PA (Luzerne Township near Brownsville) has a 9-hole course. I visited in the winter and the gate was closed at the entrance to the park. In general, the park sort of felt closed so I’m not sure if bathrooms were available or not. Additionally, the baskets or targets were not in. I learned the targets are in when the park opens from April 1st to November 1st. I noticed the park had a playground and according to the Facebook page, it looks like there are events held at the park such as fireworks. I hope to return and play when the park is open.

Some of my favorite places so far to grab a bite or something in Brownsville include Fresh Fuel Cafe and The Sandwich Shop and Deli.

South Connellsville Playground

Connellsville has a small practice course with three targets at South Connellsville Playground. I believe the city has been fundraising for a full course so I’ll be on the lookout for that.

  • parking – parking spots available near the playground and basketball courts
  • bathrooms – There seemed to be bathroom facilities, but I didn’t check.
  • course – 3 targets in an open field
  • additional features – walking loop (crushed gravel surface), playground, pavilion, basketball court, baseball field

Other Disc Golf Courses

I’ve not played these courses but in creating these posts, it looks like there are some other nearby courses outside Fayette County.
