I grew up and live in Fayette County and never knew about the Wharton Iron Furnace. I noticed it when reading a brochure. Then, I happened to glance and see it on the way to one of my favorite hikes in Quebec Run Wild Area.

The furnace is located in Forbes State Forest and is managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Directions

From Uniontown, take Route 40 East (National Pike). After the summit, take the second right on Wharton Furnace Road. Continue about 2 miles and turn rIght on Shepherd Road. Parking is on the right in front of the furnace.

It’s definitely worth a stop to explore and learn about the history of this restored furnace which was in operation from 1839 to 1872 and which is also now on the National Register of Historic Places.
