First things first, I call it sled riding instead of sledding. That’s just me. Sled riding or sledding, Sugarloaf Sled Hill in Ohiopyle State Park is a must…sled.

It’s really more than a sled hill. The thrilling hill is situated in a network of trails conducive to various winter activities, such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and more.

I enjoyed some great sled hills in my childhood. But what separates this hill from others is not only the attached trail system, but also a nearby bathroom, pavilion, warming hut, and a fire pit ring.
I’m not sure what the elevation is, but there are times when there has not been snow accumulation where I live in Uniontown or even very little accumulation in Ohiopyle, but there have been inches of accumulation at the Sugarloaf sled hill. So if there is snow in the forecast and you want to go sled riding, it might be worth a drive to see if the hill got some snow.
Directions from Ohiopyle: When arriving in Ohiopyle heading north on Route 381 from Farmington for example, make a right onto Sugarloaf Road directly across from the Visitor’s Center. If you are heading south on Route 381 from Mill Run, for example, make a left onto Sugarloaf Road.
Continue approximately 4 miles and turn right into the parking area.
The sledding hill sits in front of the parking area.
The game changer for me here is the warming hut. It’s a great place to have snacks and warm up then get back out in the snow. I like to pack some of our favorite on-the-go snacks such as pepperoni rolls and peanut butter energy balls and it’s a mom-win to pack our insulated growler full of hot chocolate. I think it would be fun to have a fire at the base of the hill and cook s’mores and hot dogs.
We have also enjoyed exploring the connecting trail system on our cross-country skis.
Don’t have a sled? You can look into renting a nice snow tube in town through White Water Adventures.
Additionally, the Baughman overlook is not far from the sled hill and is worth a stop if you have time.
Be on the lookout for the annual event of Winterfest at Sugarloaf Sled Hill. At this time, I don’t think you can rent cross-country skis in Ohiopyle, but you can rent snowshoes at Wilderness Voyageurs.
