Trail mix is a standard snack in our home. We eat trail mix at home, during travel, and on adventures. Trail mix is satisfying and energizing and I love the sweet and salty mix.

However, it seems no one in my family can agree on a premade store mix. So I started making my own and I’m happy to have found a mix we can all agree on.

Where I live, I found all of these ingredients at my local Aldi. When I lived in other parts of the country, I was able to purchase many of these ingredients in bulk sections of the grocery store. But, for some reason where I live now, either there isn’t a bulk section or if a bulk section exists, it doesn’t carry the ingredients I want.

Here is what I use from Aldi for one batch:

  • 1 30 oz container of unsalted cashews
  • 2 14 oz bags of oven roasted unsalted almonds
  • 2 5oz bags of dried cherries
  • 2 3.5 oz bags of dried blueberries
  • 2 10 oz bags of dark chocolate chips
  • Sometimes I also like to add dried banana chips.

Simply mix all the ingredients in a bowl and store the mix. I often double and triple this mix when I make it and I find it helpful to store in the cashew containers. Keep in mind the chocolate will melt if you store them in a place that is too warm.

Another thing I love about making trail mix at home is that this is a no-stress recipe to involve the kids in the kitchen. They love to remind me when we are out of trail mix and they are always pulling up a chair to the counter to help make the next batch.

Maybe this recipe will work for you, or maybe not. Let me know what is in your favorite trail mix! If you give this mix a try, leave a comment or tag me on Instagram (@adventureswkelly).
