Picking your own blueberries is a simple, fun summer activity that both my kids and I enjoy and is a great activity for both locals and visitors to the Laurel Highlands.

I’ve heard of pick-your-own blueberries at places like Triple B Farms and Trax Farms, but I was excited to find a spot a little closer to home at Degleman’s Blueberry Farm in Markleysburg, PA.

It’s been around since 1959 and I just learned about it in 2023. Now it’s becoming an annual tradition for our family.

The best way to find the most up-to-date information is to friend request Wayne Degleman on Facebook and check his page. He also provides his phone number on the page. Wayne permitted me to share what I learned to help you plan for your visit.

Directions

Degleman’s Blueberry Farm is located at 150 Degelman Rd. From Route 40, turn onto Flat Rock Rd near Curt’s Family Restaurant. Continue about 0.4 miles and then turn left on Degelman Road. The road to the fields is not paved and bumpy at times with an uphill, but you should be ok if you take it slow.

Keep following signs for blueberries and proceed slowly to the top of a hill where you will see rows of blueberry bushes, a small stand on the left, and a sign for parking.

Also, FYI there is a porta-potty near the blueberry bushes.

Times

Blueberry picking usually lasts about 4-5 weeks beginning late June/early July to late July/mid-Aug and it is typically open for picking Monday – Saturday 7am – 7pm (closed Sundays).

How it Works

They have buckets you can borrow to pick as many as you want. Simply meander through the rows of blueberry bushes to pick the ready to eat blue ones.

Take your picked blueberries to the stand where they bag them for you and charge you per quart (it was $4 a quart during our last visit – cash only).

You might want to wear sunscreen, a sun hat, and bring bug spray and I’d suggest checking for ticks when you are finished.

My kids and I both really enjoy this simple activity. The kids love looking for the blue blueberries, they feel independent picking them on their own, and they like to see who can pick more.

I also enjoy picking the blueberries myself plus I’m amazed how this activity seems to keep them occupied for a while. Overall, it’s a nice outing for spending time together outdoors.

We are big blueberry fans in my home and I love leaving with so many fresh local blueberries that we can snack on immediately or store in the freezer for oatmeal, smoothies, pancakes, and more.
