Summary

  • Itinerary- bike ride to Hutchinson Park, play at the playground
  • Distance- approximately 2 miles one way, easy, flat
  • Total Time- about two hours including riding, playing at the playground, snacks
  • Kids ages- 2 1/2 years and 10 months
  • Child Transport- My kids were on their own Topeak Babyseat, each attached to an adult bike. We also have an Instep Bike Trailer which would have been fine, but there’s less crying going on when my kids are separated in their own seats.
  • Surface- pavement

Parking

There are multiple parking opportunities along the trail. You can park near Cluss Lumber on Pennsylvania Ave, at a parking lot at Tails on the Trail Dog Park, beside the South Union Township Building, at Meadowbrook Ballfield, and at Hutchinson Park.

There are restrooms at Meadowbrook and Hutchinson.

The Ride

The trail is flat and easy on a paved surface. You can ride bikes, walk, jog, or explore in other creative ways. It’s approximately two miles from the area near Cluss Lumber to Hutchinson Park.

There are a few road crossings along the way. In my opinion, cars tend to go fast on these windy roads, so use caution when crossing.

If you want to avoid road crossings, (perhaps you are teaching a young one to ride a bike, or maybe you have a hard time getting around physically), the longest stretch of trail without crossing a road is from Barton Mill Rd to Township Dr (approximately 0.8 miles one way), in which case I would suggest parking at the dog park. The next longest stretch without crossing a road is from Township Dr to Redstone Furnace Rd (approximately 0.5 miles one way), suggested parking would be at Meadowbrook Ballfield or near the South Union Township building.

Trail Features

The South Union portion of the trail begins near the new South Union Township Sports Complex that used to be part of O.C. Cluss. There is a small section of trail that has now entered the city from Pennsylvania to Besson Ave (opposite the direction of Hutchinson Park).

It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the trail rules with signs on the way. For more information, visit South Union Township’s website.

One of the first features you’ll notice is Tails on the Trail Dog Park with an attached parking lot.

There are multiple benches, picnic areas, and pet waste stations along the trail in addition to distance markers.

You’ll encounter views of Redstone Creek or “crick” as many say.

Before a road crossing at Redstone Furnace Rd is a larger picnic area with some art.

Meadowbrook Ballfield

Next, you’ll come across Meadowbrook Ballfield. This area offers a playground, ballfield, covered pavilion, bathrooms, and parking area.

Hutchinson Park

The trail then leads to the entrance of Hutchison Park at a covered bridge, a repurposed pedestrian walkway. It’s common to see people having their wedding or family photos taken in this area.

Hutchinson Park offers a walking loop (approximately 0.75 miles) with a spur trail up a hill to a nice view at the top. Pull-up bars are available for an added exercise challenge.

The park also offers covered pavilions, a soccer field, ballfields, a basketball court, a playground, special needs swings, a Gaga ball pit, a free library, and a blessing box.

If you don’t have a bike, Hutchinson Park offers bike rentals in the warmer months. Click here for all of the details on how to rent these bikes with the Movatic app.

Check in with South Union Township’s website and Facebook page for special events like Trick or Treat on the trail, summer movie nights at the park, and holiday carriage rides.

There are also some geocaching opportunities offered here and there in the area.

Here is a breakdown of our ride for reference.

I must mention a great food option near the trail, Mom Maruca’s. They have pizza, subs, wings, and more, in addition to lots of craft beer (they fill growlers), plus outdoor seating with live music is available in the warmer months. I think it would be fun to park at Hutchinson Park and ride to Mom Marcua’s.
