Formerly The Inne at Watson’s Choice in Uniontown, PA, Deer Creek Winery and Watson Estate Bed & Breakfast changed ownership in November 2022. The lovely new owners Rhonda and Denny just so happened to reach out to offer me and my husband a free stay (room only provided for one night) with a tour to help get the word out on some changes here. So I’d like to share a little more about our stay. Long story short, we absolutely loved it!

I had heard wonderful things about this place after its opening and had been meaning to check it out. This place is so close to where we live and I had never been here before. I can’t believe it.

Staycation

I am growing to love the concept of staycations more and more. I consider a staycation to be either staying at home and making a day trip, or staying overnight somewhere close to home. Staycations eliminate the extra cost and time associated with travel.

I think staycations are especially great for parents of young children (if childcare is available), particularly for parents who are hesitant to leave their kids. It’s always nice to break away from home and routines. Being close by allows parents to get away, but offers peace of mind knowing that you can get to the kids quickly in the event you need to. I feel it’s important to date my spouse and I feel everyone in my family benefits from having a break from each. It seemed like our stay between Christmas and the New Year holiday in 2022 couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for us. We had a beautiful and relaxing Christmas, but admittedly also loud, chaotic, and exhausting. And while I wholeheartedly enjoy the beautiful chaos, I was craving some peace and quiet and one on one time with my husband. The bed and breakfast is family friendly, but this overnight date was the staycation we didn’t know we needed.

The peaceful and quiet atmosphere allowed us to reflect on our beautiful Christmas and actually get around to discussing preparations for the arrival of baby number three.

I don’t think I had ever been here before because I was under the impression that it was only open to overnight guests. But with this new ownership, I definitely want to share my main takeaway: this place is open both to overnight guests and guests who aren’t staying the night. If you aren’t staying the night, you can still go and enjoy a delicious meal in the cafe, wine tastings, live music, and more. Plus you can inquire about hosting an event here.

Location

The winery and bed & breakfast is located just off route 21 in between Uniontown and Masontown (about one hour from Pittsburgh and 30 minutes from Morgantown) in Fayette County, PA, and is situated on 42 acres. This is a great place to consider staying for anyone exploring all that the Laurel Highlands has to offer.

Here is some basic contact information:

When you go to the website, you’ll notice winery information and booking for two locations. Rhonda and Denny started Deer Creek Winery in Shippenville, PA. They later added a bed and breakfast to the winery in Shippenville. Then they expanded to this second bed and breakfast location in Uniontown. The wines from Deer Creek Winery are available in Uniontown with free wine tastings and bottles for sale.

The Property

I can’t be responsible for sharing the extensive history associated with this property. But in short, it’s my understanding that John Watson purchased the land for $60 in 1769 after serving in the American Revolution. The original home was built in the early 1800s and a barn, a stable, and an additional home was later added. The historic interior and exterior provide a very charming atmosphere.

There are several historic touches scattered all throughout the property which transport you to another time including a well, a stepping stone to mount a horse, an ice house and more.

Wherever we go, my husband loves to walk around and examine how things are built. So he was in glory. walking around this place and admiring the construction.

Amenities

The Winery

The winery tasting room offers free wine tastings plus lots of other goodies in the adorable shop. We also loved tasting the large selection of infused olive oil and vinegar.

You can also shop, get exclusive deals, and learn more by downloading the Deer Creek Winery App in the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

This winery is a stop on the Laurel Highlands Pour Tour. When you visit the winery, you can get a stamp for your Laurel Highlands Pour Tour Passport or you can log your visit in the Laurel Highlands Pour Tour App available in the Apple Store and Google Play Store.

If you like passports as much as I do, be sure to check out another post I created about the National Park Passports, and what to do if you miss your stamp.

The Cafe

Hats off to the chef and staff. The food was excellent! At this time, lunch and dinner are served daily and available to everyone. Be sure to check the website or social media for the most up-to-date information about the cafe.

Breakfast is available to overnight guests only at this time and is included with the stay. As a big fan of breakfast, I can attest it hit the spot!

Live Music

Live music is scheduled every weekend. Check their social media for the most up-to-date information about who is playing and when.

They are mindful of providing softer acoustic music so you can enjoy some entertainment, but still hold a conversation, which we loved. We enjoyed a wonderful performance from Acoustical Bruce who plays here fairly often.

After dinner, we spent some time at the fire pit outside.

They have plans to move the music outside in the warmer months. I can’t wait to return and enjoy a glass of wine outside in the beautiful courtyard while the kids run around.

Lodging

There are two homes with themed rooms available in each. The Harvest House has 5 rooms and the Estate House has 7 rooms.

We stayed in the Laurel King Suite in the Harvest House. This is the largest private suite and offers a king bed plus a twin bed, a bathroom with a large bathtub, and a fireplace with sitting areas. Our room was clean, spacious, and cozy!

The Harvest House and the Estate House each have common areas in addition to the bedrooms.

There are also two separate cottages.

Our stay was sponsored, but glancing at the prices, I would consider these rooms to be reasonably priced.

That wraps up what I have to share about our visit to Deer Creek Winery and Watson Estate Bed & Breakfast. My husband and I would like to extend our deep gratitude to the lovely owners, the friendly staff, and the talented Acoustical Bruce for providing a wonderful and memorable experience for us. We can’t wait to go back.
