The Sheepskin Trail is a 34-mile trail project in Fayette County, PA. Once completed, it will connect the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) to the Mon River Trails. You can read more about Sheepskin Trail, the GAP, and the Mon River Trails.

South Union Township in Uniontown, PA offers bike rentals in the township’s completed portion of the Sheepskin Trail. For a closer look at the trail, check out Sheepskin Trail South Union Township Uniontown, PA. The bike rentals are a great option to consider in exploring this section of the trail if you don’t have a bike.

Locations

There are currently two bike rental locations with five bikes each. One station is located in Hutchinson Park near the soccer field and the other set of bikes is located at the South Union Township Building.

The bike rental location at the township building also features a bike repair station.

The Bikes

The bikes have seven gears, a comfortable and adjustable seat, a kickstand, and a rear basket for personal belongings. After taking a test drive, I can attest that the bikes feel sturdy and offer a smooth ride.

How to Rent the Bikes

I will attempt to describe an overview of the process. I imagine the rental rate and the app are subject to change.

The instructions are posted on the front of each bike to help you through the process.

In order to access the bikes, you need to download The Movatic app which is free in the App Store and Google Play Store.

When you open the app, it will start to scan for available rental locations near you. It should display the rental rate and then you can hit “Select a Bike.” The bikes currently cost $3.50 for a base rate plus an additional $2.50 an hour.

Then it will prompt you to enter your credit card information and it will take you through a series of prompts where you have to agree to terms and such.

Then, enter the bike number you wish to rent. The number is located below the seat.

At this point, the app will direct you to hold your phone near the bike. When it recognizes the bike, it will give you ten seconds to unlock it.

This part can be a little tricky. I found it helpful to slightly push the bike in while lifting it up a bit to unlock it. If you have any trouble unlocking it, you can tap “Try Unlocking Again” and either try again or try another bike. If you were able to unlock it, you can tap “Continue” and acknowledge you are responsible for the bike until it is locked again.

From here, you are free to go enjoy your ride. When you return the bike, the app will prompt you to “End Rental.” It may ask you to review your experience. And that concludes the rental process.

Ride Suggestions

As for where to ride the bikes, my suggestion would be to follow the Sheepskin Trail toward the city of Uniontown. It’s about 2 miles from Hutchinson Park to a great trailside food option, Mom Maruca’s which offers a bike rack to park your bike, outdoor patio seating, and a wide selection of local craft beer, with pizza, subs, wings, and more. You can keep riding into the city of Uniontown for many other food options.

Along the trail, you will also pass Meadowbrook Park, a picnic area with art, a dog park, and more.

You can also keep an eye out for a trail in the works providing a back entrance to the Lick Hollow Picnic Area.

I hope you check out the bike rentals along the Sheepskin Trail in Uniontown, PA. If you do, leave a comment or tag me on Instagram (@adventureswkelly). I’d love to see or hear all about your adventures with the bike rentals on the Sheepskin Trail.
