The Sheepskin Trail is a 34-mile trail project in Fayette County, PA. Once completed, it will connect the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) to the Mon River Trail. You can read more about Sheepskin Trail, the GAP, and the Mon River Trails.

We enjoyed a nice day on a completed portion in Point Marion, just taking a family walk. Check out how we explored the Sheepskin Trail in Dunbar.

Summary

  • Itinerary- Walk to the state line, snacks at the weather shelter, geocache, and play on the playground
  • Distance- about 1.75 miles one way, easy, flat
  • Total Time- about 2.5 hours including the walk, snacks, and time at the playground
  • Kids ages- 2 1/2 years and 11 months
  • Child Transport- We let my son get some practice on his balance bike while having the double stroller ready for when he was over it.
  • Surface- Crushed rock (gravel, I think). No problems with the stroller on the surface.

Parking

We parked at a parking lot along the trail.

This parking lot was within walking distance of the ball field and playground.

There was a porta potty at the playground and boat launch. You can also park in that area.

The Walk

My husband dropped me off in town where I walked the trail then met him at the parking lot. I enjoyed a moment to myself and some trail art in town.

It was about 0.5 miles from town to the parking lot along the trail. From there we walked about another mile further to the Pennsylvania/West Virginia State Line.

This is where the Sheepskin Trail ends and the Mon River Trail begins.

Just beyond the state line is a weather shelter. This was a great place to take a break, have a pepperoni roll and other snacks, and enjoy views of the river.

Then, we turned around and headed back toward the playground. The trail is flat and a crushed gravel surface.

There’s nice views of the Monongahela River (“The Mon”) along the way.

We found one geocache near the trail. It looks like there are a few geocaching opportunities along the trail here and there.

Playground

After the walk, we had a good time playing on the playground. It was a beautiful day in Point Marion with great family time outside together, and that’s a fabulous day in my book.

Here’s a breakdown of our walk. I can’t wait for more portions of the trail to be completed.

I hope you check out the Sheepskin Trail in Point Marion. Next time I visit, I’d love to get on my bike and ride toward Morgantown.
