Jumonville Christian Camp and Retreat Center is a gem to say the least in Fayette County, PA. It is a private facility that offers camps, retreats, and events. But, the grounds are open to the public from dawn to dusk with a variety of recreation opportunities. In this post, I’ll be listing some of the things I’ve explored and I’ll add hikes as I complete them.

Jumonville is a great place to spend some quality time outdoors with loved ones or by yourself.
Parking and Restrooms
There are two areas where we tend to park. If we to hike to the cross or in the Kingwood area, play disc golf, or play on the athletic fields, we park on Old Braddock Rd.
We park near the main campus if we plan to play on the playground or explore the prayer trail.
Public restrooms are located in the back of Fleming Lodge (Office).
Fleming Lodge is located near the playground. Refer to the map for more details.
Hiking
The Hike to the Cross
If you drive around Uniontown, PA, and turn your attention toward the mountains, you’ll likely spot a large white cross. You can hike up there and enjoy a beautiful overlook view. I would guess this is probably the most popular activity at Jumonville. Check out a separate post about the Hike to the Cross with additional information.
Kingwood Trail System
There is also an enjoyable trail system in the Kingwood area. Trails are color-coded and well-marked.
A map is posted near the trailhead and the map is also available online. Parking for the Cross and the Kingwood area is located off Old Braddock Rd.
Green Cathedral
It’s a short hike from the Kingwood Trailhead to the scenic Green Cathedral, an open space that is serene and beautiful and a really nice place to take in nature and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Jumonville Glen
I find many locals sort of just say “Jumonville” and don’t really differentiate Jumonville Glen from the camp and retreat center. I didn’t understand the difference either until I decided to look into it. Jumonville Glen has some very interesting history involving George Washington. This is a subunit of Fort Necessity National Battlefield. It’s closed seasonally, but in the warmer months, you can park close to it and either check it out from an overlook or hike about a half-mile loop. But, you can also hike there from the trail system in the Kingwood area on the Yellow Trail. Check out another post about hiking to Jumonville Glen with additional information.
1.1 Mile Loop Hike
Here’s some info about a random hike we did one day that amounted to about a 1.1-mile loop. This was a great distance for my almost 2 and 4-year-old to hike on their own. We set out to complete the Orange Trail. But, my kids weren’t having it that day. So we turned right on the Blue Trail, took the Red Trail to Green Cathedral, and then looped back on the main trail toward our vehicle (route highlighted in pink in the picture below). There’s a neat prayer labyrinth to keep an eye out for on the main trail.
The Orange Trail has some really neat rock formations. And on this hike, I spotted my first painted trillium in the spring, which I hear is pretty rare. As a warning, there are also a lot of jaggers. I love the beauty and peace that surrounds Green Cathedral and on this hike, it was the perfect place to take a break, have snacks, and let the kids play and explore.
I had the pleasure of talking about this hike in a segment of this episode of All in a Day’s Drive.
Fit Trail
If you are interested in changing up your regular workout routine. The Red Trail is a .84-mile loop with fitness stations along the way.
Prayer Trail
Pick up a brochure and complete a guided prayer trail with seven stops. Brochures are available at stations 1, 4, and 7. Station 1 is at The Inn near the playground.
Geocaching
There are several geocaching opportunities on-site. If you aren’t familiar with geocaching it’s sort of like a treasure hunt and is a great family-friendly activity.
- Fire in the Hole
- Green Cathedral
- Nothing but Tree
- Jumonville Glen
- Take a Load Off
- To the Top
- Sherri’s Cache
Other Amenities
Playground
My kids always enjoy the playground, and I love that this playground offers an adult swing (not pictured) where I can sit and relax while the kids play (…for about 30 seconds).
Disc Golf
An 18-hole disc golf course is available. I’ve been itching to play this course as I used to play disc golf a good bit in college, but I’m having trouble getting to it currently. If you are into disc golf, there’s another (9-hole) course nearby at Wharton Twp Recreational Park.
Sports Facilities
Play a pickup game of basketball, tennis, volleyball, gaga ball, and more.
Climbing Gym
There is also an indoor climbing gym onsite. We attended a Friday Night Climb event. Check the social media or give them a call to see when the gym is open to the public.
