On a past Father’s Day weekend, I spontaneously decided to book a two-night stay for our first-time visit to the Uniontown KOA Campground – At River’s Edge. Our stay was not hosted and it was a two-night minimum. It was our first tent camping trip as a family of 5 when my children were ages 4 years, 3 years, and 4 months.

Camping is one of those things in my opinion that is easier the more you do it. And if you aren’t in the routine of camping, it’s easy to feel intimidated and overwhelmed. For a variety of reasons I won’t get into, which we are laughing about now, we could only tolerate one out of two sleepless nights. Not all adventures go as smoothly as planned. And, I wonder if this is how my husband might have actually wanted to celebrate Father’s Day, something a bit taxing on our parenting skills and our also marriage.

But, all in all, we absolutely loved our first-time stay at the Uniontown KOA Campground and so I thought I’d share some of my takeaways for a closer look.

Location and Contact Information

I learned about this campground the first time I floated the Youghiogheny River from Connellsville to Dawson where I spotted the campground located right on the river. Check out Youghiogheny River Float- Connellsville to Dawson, PA to learn about that great summer activity.

It’s a fantastic location situated between the Youghiogheny River and the Great Allegheny Passage and is a good place to post up while exploring so much in Fayette County and the Laurel Highlands.

Be sure to check the campground’s website and social media for the most up-to-date information. Give them a call with any questions. The staff is so friendly and happy to answer any questions.

Open all year, it’s called the Uniontown KOA. To me, it feels a little more like Connellsville. I think technically it’s located in Adelaide.

Campsites

A variety of campsites are available including tent sites, RV sites, and cabins.

Our tent site was spacious and centrally located between the pool, lodge, and playground. Golf carts are available for rent, but might be hard to come by if you don’t reserve ahead of time, especially in the summer. We did fine without a golf cart.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn our tent site had electricity. It also had a covered counter/table area, a fire pit, a charcoal grill, and a picnic table. Check out our family tent if you are interested.

The campground was very lively during our first night and I was starting to worry it wasn’t going to get quiet. But I have to say, as soon as quiet hours hit, they were well respected by everyone. My husband and I enjoyed a lovely quiet fire after our kids went to bed.

What we weren’t expecting was the frequent passing of a train at night. The campground does offer ear plugs for the train and we met a couple at another tent that brought a sound machine which might be a good suggestion to pack if you have one.

Campground Amenities

I’m sure we missed several things during our stay, but here are a few things we enjoyed or noticed.

Pool

The pool has been recently updated and I really liked the size of it, (not too big and not too small). Compared to another local campground we enjoy, for example, the pool at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Mill Run, this is much smaller, but still a lot of fun.

When we decided not to stay the second night, I took all three of my kids to the pool by myself while my husband packed up our camp and I felt confident in managing them here on my own.

Games and Activities

There’s a lot to enjoy like the playground, Gaga Ball pit, basketball court, an arcade, lawn games like horseshoes, corn hole, checkers, and more. Plus there are scheduled activities like crafts and Bingo.

It’s also nice to just walk or bike around the campground and Great Allegheny Passage, and explore along the river’s edge.

Store and Cafe

There is a store with souvenirs and a variety of camping supplies if you forgot something.

If you don’t want to deal with packing or cooking food, a cafe is also on-site with a nice menu selection. As a big fan of ice cream, I don’t know I managed to miss it having some. But, my husband snuck some without me knowing and he said it was excellent. It was Father’s Day and he needed a moment to himself. I’ll let it slide.

Visitor Passes

Visitor passes are available for a small fee if you are staying at the campground and want to have visitors. On Father’s Day, it was really nice that my parents came to visit us.

They actually parked their bikes in Connellsville at the Yough River Park and rode the GAP to the campground (about 3.5 to 4 miles one way). They didn’t stay too long, but they could have used the pool and other campground amenities if they wanted to with their passes.

I imagine there are tons of places where you can plan a day trip on the GAP and make a stop here for maybe a quick bite or ice cream cone. For example, you might ride the Sheepskin Trail from Dunbar. When my kids get to biking longer distances more independently, I think it would be fun to stay here again and bike to Yough River Park for some playground time and coffee at Youghiogheny Coffee Company or ice cream at New Haven Trailside Treats, for instance.

Floating the River

You can check out my separate post about floating the river Youghiogheny River Float- Connellsville to Dawson, PA, or you can make it a lot easier on yourself and look into a great service offered by the campground where they shuttle you to float the river and allow you to book their tubes or kayaks. This service is also available to people who are not staying overnight at the campground on certain days.

So that’s a brief overview of our stay at the Uniontown KOA Campground. I hope you found this information helpful. If you explore the this campground, leave a comment or tag me on Instagram (@adventureswkelly) to share your experience.

Although we didn’t stay that second night, I feel like we got our money’s worth with the reasonably priced tent sites and wonderful campground amenities. I’m so glad it was so close to home allowing us to spend all day having fun and packing up at the end to sleep in our own beds, making for another great staycation option, one that we would gladly return to for another visit.
