This post features ideas for exploring the place I call home, focusing on the charming and historic walkable downtown area of the City of Uniontown highlighting eateries, shops, and public spaces.

A Short Story

I’d like to share a brief story that inspired this post. The Historic Summit Inn located on the National Road offers a breathtaking view of the Uniontown Area. As a hotel guest, I noticed a gentleman enjoying his breakfast admiring the view of Uniontown at length. We struck up a conversation.

He asked where I was from and I shared I live in Uniontown.

“Down there?” he asked. He was from Ohio and he mentioned he had been meeting family at the Summit Inn for over 30 consecutive years, vacationing in the Laurel Highlands, but his family had never ventured down to Uniontown. He proceeded to ask me what there was to do and asked for restaurant recommendations.

That encounter got me thinking about viewing the lovely place I call home from the perspective of a visitor. So much so, that we along with some friends of ours have created a space downtown for visitors to stay. Check out our recently restored historic downtown Airbnb called The 1848. Follow up on Facebook and/or Instagram. At this time, we are offering a 2 bedroom and a studio (with Vito’s Tea House on the main floor.

Also, let me put in a plug here that I’ve also become involved in helping with the Uniontown Farmers Market so be sure to visit the market on Saturday mornings in the summer at Bailey Park (9am-12pm).

This post is dedicated to that man and any other visitors to the area. However, I think this might be helpful to residents as well. Through this experience, I realized I still have a lot to learn about Uniontown.

I feel like downtown Uniontown is a great place for visitors and lifelong residents alike to stroll the streets of downtown while admiring the architecture, grabbing a bite to eat, shopping, and checking out some parks and events.

We have a very historical town that is worth digging into. I can’t be responsible for sharing the history, but for some key points, the city was founded by Henry Beeson on July 4, 1776, the Historic National Road runs through it, and the city prides itself as the birthplace of George C Marshall.

You can learn a lot more about the city’s history downtown by exploring the Uniontown Historic Walking Tour. Scan QR codes throughout downtown to learn more about each stop, and/or pick up a rack card at the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce or From Scratch where you can grab a coffee for your walk around.

If you want to learn more about the history of Uniontown, check out the Fayette County Historical Society and the Uniontown Library.

The Guide

This guide is just scratching the surface with some basic information and will remain a work in progress. I can’t guarantee all the information is up to date as things change frequently. But, I hope this post can help serve as a starting point for exploring the city.

For this list, I’m focusing on locally owned shops and restaurants located in or in close proximity to our downtown area. There are also many additional downtown businesses not listed that might tend to serve the local community more than visitors (e.g. hair salons, barber shops, tattoo studios, photography, etc).

Other sources of information to check out include the City of Uniontown’s website and Facebook page, the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, Uniontown Downtown Business District Authority, Go Laurel Highlands, and the Fayette County website.

Ok let’s get started.

Canton Chinese Restaurant

  • Address: 145 E Fayette St
  • Facebook page
  • My two cents: I’ll admit the outside and inside of the building can use some love, but the takeout is pretty darn good Chinese food.
